There is a lot of outdated information on the internet regarding getting married in Turkey. If you are reading forum posts from 2013, close them immediately. The regulations changed significantly in 2014.

As a UK citizen, you have two options: 1. The Legal Ceremony: You sign the official registry book in Kalkan. You are legally married under Turkish Law (internationally recognized). 2. The Symbolic Ceremony: You do the "legal bit" at a registry office in the UK for £50, and have a non-binding blessing in Kalkan.

If you choose Option 1 (The Legal Ceremony), here is the exact process.

The "No Impediment" Confusion

The Turkish authorities need proof that you are single and free to marry. Previously, you could get this from the Consulate. Not anymore.

You now need an Affidavit of Marital Status.

Do not fly to Dalaman without these in your hand luggage:

The "Iddet" Period (Wait Period)

There is a specific rule in Turkish Law regarding divorced women. A woman cannot remarry within 300 days of her divorce being finalized. This is to determine paternity in case of pregnancy.

  • Does this apply to foreigners? Technically, Turkish authorities should respect your national law (which has no wait period). However, local marriage officers often enforce the 300-day rule to be safe.
  • The Fix: If you have been divorced for less than 300 days, please tell us immediately. We can assist, but we need to know in advance.
