Getting Legally Married in Turkey

A step-by-step guide to the legal requirements, documents, and timeline for tying the knot in Turkey.

Officiant reading during waterfront wedding ceremony

Getting legally married in Turkey as a British citizen is straightforward, but it does require some advance planning. Here's everything you need to know.

Required Documents

Both partners will need: 1. Valid passport — with at least 6 months' validity 2. Certificate of No Impediment (CNI) — obtained from your local register office in the UK 3. Birth certificate — full version, apostilled 4. Decree absolute — if previously divorced (apostilled) 5. Death certificate of former spouse — if widowed (apostilled)

All documents must be translated into Turkish by an authorised translator and notarised.

The Timeline

We recommend starting the paperwork at least 3 months before your wedding date: - 3 months before: Apply for your CNI from your local register office - 2 months before: Get documents apostilled and translated - 1 month before: Submit documents to the local marriage office in Kalkan - Wedding week: Civil ceremony conducted by a Turkish marriage officer

Civil vs. Symbolic Ceremonies

Many couples choose to complete a simple civil ceremony in the UK before the trip, then have a beautiful symbolic ceremony in Kalkan with full creative freedom. We can help you decide which route works best.
